“It is hard to live two lives in one.” Edith Piaf speaks through to us in the words of the young and talented author, Sara Rajković. This sentence sums up the remarkable life of this tiny, frail figure who wore size 34 shoes. In her piercing and powerful songs we recognize the streets of Paris and the spirit of the Parisian music halls from the ’30s, as well as their splendor which gathered the elite of the time. She was a friend of Jean Cocteau, the Godmother of Marlene Dietrich, a mentor to Charles Aznavour and Yves Montand, and an inspiration to an entire generation. Piaf became a Parisian legend by staying true to the street and the carneval, in her songs and in her personal life. She loved passionately and without holding back, and her simplicity, her wistful longing and the freedom to be herself, on the fringes of society as well as under the spotlight captivated audiences.
Inspired by the fairytale of the street urchin turned star, the authors tried to portray this passionate life which burned brightly until its very end. Just like St. Theresa, Edith’s spiritual patroness said: "What matters in life is not great deeds, but great love."
The association ’Tri groša’ was established in Septembre 2015 and its first officcial production is the play Edith, which premiered late 2015. The founders and members of the association ascribed their previous projects to the Association, one of which was the play Emigrants, Prisoners of Freedom. It was directed by Marija Lipkovski and it had been a three-year-long project. The play Emigrants was created in Berlin in 2014, and it has been performed in numerous festivals throughout Europe (Germany, Czech, Russia). It won the award for Best Directing at the ArtOkraina festival in Saint Petersburg in 2015.
A WORD FROM THE SELECTOR
A contemporary play which uses performance art (combining acting, music, movement, mime, circus skills..) and leads the audience through the rich and controversial life of Edith Piaf. A team of young artists (dramaturge, director, composer and pianist) enabled the artist/performer to show both her acting abilities, as well as her talent for singing.
